Training for the civics exam: method and answering strategy
4 min read

The rules of the examen civique dictate the right strategy on their own: a wrong answer and a blank answer are both worth exactly 0 points, so you should never leave a question empty. With 40 questions in 45 minutes and a 32/40 threshold, everything else follows from those two numbers.
Information verified on 12 August 2026, from the arrêté of 10 October 2025, CESEDA art. D. 413-12-2 and the Ministry of the Interior's own site
formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr. This page is preparation help, not legal advice.
The arithmetic of the paper
| Fact | Value | What it implies |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 40 (28 knowledge + 12 situational) | Two kinds of exercise, to be trained separately |
| Time | 45 minutes maximum | A little over one minute per question, checking included |
| Options | 4, only one correct | Eliminating two options moves you from 25 % to 50 % |
| Pass mark | 32/40 | 8 mistakes allowed, not one more |
| Negative marking | none | Always answer, even by guessing |
| Retakes | unlimited, no waiting period | A failure costs only another registration |
| Validity of the pass | no expiry date | There is no downside to sitting it early |
There is no minimum score per theme: the threshold is pooled. You can lose your 8 points anywhere.
Three answering rules
1. Never hand in a blank question. This is the most profitable rule in the whole paper, and it is written into the marking scheme: a wrong answer takes nothing away. On a question you know nothing about, guessing is mathematically better than abstaining.
2. Eliminate before you choose. The questions are multiple choice with four options, only one correct. Ruling out one or two obviously wrong options doubles or quadruples your odds on the uncertain questions — that is where the margin is won.
3. Do not get stuck. Just over a minute per question on average: a question that resists for more than two minutes is a bad trade. Mark an answer — never nothing — and move on.
What to train on, in practice
The Ministry of the Interior publishes the prompts of the knowledge questions on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr under the Etalab 2.0 licence: 172 prompts for the carte de séjour pluriannuelle strand and 189 for the carte de résident strand (counted on 12 August 2026).
What is not published: the four options, the correct answer, and the 12 situational questions. That asymmetry changes how you should train:
- For the 28 knowledge questions, the set of possible subjects is finite and public. Work through it as a list to cover, not as a text to reread.
- For the 12 situational questions, no official bank exists. Train the reasoning — what to do in a given situation of life in France — rather than an answer key to memorise. Our practice situations are written by us from the Ministry's framework and its civics training sheets; we do not hold the real ones and we do not claim otherwise.
- Always finish with a full timed paper. Revising by theme and sitting the exam are two different exercises: the second mixes 40 questions and imposes 45 minutes.
Four expensive mistakes
1. Paying for a preparation site. The Ministry itself warns against paid sites, which "are not run by the Ministry, carry a risk of fraud and may contain false information". That is one reason our training is free and points back to the official resources throughout.
2. Believing pass rates found online. No official pass-rate statistics exist: neither the Ministry nor the approved bodies publish any. The figures in circulation rest on no verifiable source.
3. Confusing it with the language exam. The civics exam is sat in French, but it is not a language paper, and passing it does not exempt you from proving level A2: they are two separate conditions of CESEDA art. L. 433-4.
4. Putting it off. Retakes are unlimited with no waiting period, and the pass certificate has no expiry date. It is the only one of the three exams where there is strictly nothing to gain by waiting — unlike a language attestation, valid for 2 years.
Sit a full paper now
Our free practice paper reproduces the official format — 40 questions, four options, one correct answer, carte de séjour pluriannuelle strand — with instant marking and an explanation for each answer. The theme-by-theme revision plan is set out in the 5 themes of the civics exam, and the official framework in 40 questions, 32 correct answers.
On the language side, the two papers least covered elsewhere are writing and speaking, both marked by AI on our site.
